- A tail or flap is normally on one (or both) end of a tarpaulin body to hang down on the front or the rear to make tarping a load easier. Example: Standard Lumber Tarp (SL18) 8′ drop with 8’x 8′ tail.
- The drop is the measurement from the top of the tarp to the bottom of the tarp. Example: Standard Lumber Tarp (SL18) 8′ drop with 8’x 8′ tail.

- A grommet is a reinforced hole in the tarpaulin body to allow a rope or bungee to be attached to the tarp. Example: Standard Lumber Tarp (SL18) 8′ drop with 8’x 8′ tail.
- A D-ring is a metal ring that is sewn into the tarpaulin body to allow a rope or bungee to be attached to the tarp. Example: Standard Lumber Tarp (SL18) 8′ drop with 8’x 8′ tail.
- A tarpaulin is a large sheet of strong, flexible, water-resistant or waterproof material, often cloth such as canvas or polyester coated with urethane, or made of plastics such as polyethylene.
